What to expect
We start at 8pm on Monday evenings, either in the brewing room or upstairs at Steam Town Brew Co, and sessions typically last 1:15hrs. Afterwards the attendees often socialise in the bar for a post-singing drink. Arrive a little early to get your bearings; just ask the friendly bar staff to point you to the session when you arrive. You‘ll often find the crew meeting in the bar beforehand with a drink in hand and clutching folders of lyric sheets.
As a new attendee you will be welcomed by one of the people who lead the sessions. Your first session will be free, subsequent sessions are £5 per session. Fees are collected by the person leading the session and go to the Steam Town Shanty Crew to fund the operating costs of the sessions and support the wider activities of the Steam Town Shanty Crew performing group.
Lyric sheets will be provided for all the songs that will be sung in the session. Depending on your singing voice (high/low) we may suggest you stand near some of the other attendees with a similar voice to help you hear the melody of the song being sung. We occasionally teach some new songs in a formal manner but most of the time new songs, and any new starters learning existing songs, start by listening to the song being sung, pick up the melody, and join in when they can; just like it used to be on ship.
There is a community of support and encouragement so don’t miss joining in the chat in the Bar afterwards, and if you start to attend regularly also joining the chat in the active WhatsApp group.
Q&A
Do I need previous singing experience?
Absolutely not.
You don’t need singing experience, musical training or a “proper” voice.
All you need is a willingness to give it a try and to join in with the choruses.
If you’d rather just listen for a week or two while you get your bearings, that’s fine as well.
Do I need to know the songs?
No. We provide lyric sheets and teach the choruses. You’ll pick them up fast.
Is it really every Monday?
Yes, unless we announce otherwise on our social media – check our Facebook page for any last-minute changes. https://www.facebook.com/steamtownshantycrew
Is there a limit on numbers?
No, not yet. We have never exceeded the space available but if we did become too busy we may cap numbers on the night for comfort and safety.
Can I bring an instrument?
No, please don’t. We pride ourselves on being an a cappella group and developing rich vocal harmonies amoungst our male and female singers.
Do I need to sing in front of other people?
There is the opportunity for anyone regularly taking part in the Monday night shanty session to perform in the bar at the Steam Town Brew Co at the quarterly showcases and other Steam Town events throughout the year. If you don’t want to sing in front of an audience then you don’t need to take part.
What if I love singing and want to perform more?
If you catch the shanty bug and grow a love of performing then you can become a registered member of the Steam Town Shanty Crew Performing Group. The Steam Town Shanty Crew arranges and manages all the performance opportunities including performances in support of community fundraising, at festivals, and private events in addition to those held at Steam Town Brew Co.
